Scheduling Surgery: My Son Needs Ear Tube Surgery and an Adenoidectomy. Now what?

Well, the ENT called back this morning. It's official... my four year old needs surgery.

Fortunately, like I said in my previous post, his hearing was basically normal. So that's good.

The problem is that the X-Rays showed he has severely enlarged adenoids. Like humongous. That combined with the frequent ear infections and the chronic allergy symptoms and drainage means that he has to have an adenoidectomy, and likely a tonsilectomy too. Plus, we have to get those pesky ear tubes too so that all the massive amounts of drainage behind his ears will finally go away.

I'm freaking out pretty good. I know this is a common procedure and he will likely feel SO MUCH BETTER after this surgery. I don't like him being on antibiotics so much. I don't like him feeling miserable. I'm just terrified of surgery, particularly the anesthetic.

It's possible that these issues are related to his behavioral and sensory issues. We just won't know until after they're done. We're still going forward with the early intervention procedure because he does show signs of aspergers, etc. and all of the assessments will be done before the surgery since the next available date is toward the end of the month.

I wish we could at least postpone it another couple of weeks until my mom moves down here. But, my amazing mother-in-law will be here and she will help. Plus, Honey Graham will take a day or two off of work to help too.

I'm scared. I know this is what we need to do, but if anything happens to that little boy... I just love him so much.

Have your kids ever had surgery?
