When The Moon Hits Your Eye: Review of Melissa & Doug's Montessori Pretend Wooden Play Pizza Party Toy for Children

Pizza! Who doesn’t love pizza!? We eat it at least once a week here. It’s one of the few foods Froot Loop doesn’t complain about eating.

Melissa and Doug has an awesome wooden pizza set. It comes with six sliceable wooden painted pizza slices and over 50 different pieces for toppings.

There’s pepperoni, Peppers, and mushrooms! The toy works by Velcro tabs. The Velcro holds the slices together as well as holds the toppings on the slices. This is great because it holds the pieces together until it’s time to slice them apart. The pizza cutter is able to separate the Velcro halves easily and it makes a satisfying slicing sound too! 

There’s also a wooden pizza cutter and pizza spatula and a nice green plate. It all stores neatly in a sturdy wooden box.

The pizza cutter moves just like a real one, which I really appreciate. The pizza server looks like the real thing too (but don’t use either of these utensils with real food!). 

We like to make pizzas for everyone. I try to get him to take orders and sometimes he will.

We also use the toppings for patterns and sorting and math activities. 

This is a fun way for him to learn preschool skills without him even realizing he's learning. 

It’s also fun to take toppings from other Melissa and Doug play food sets and have strawberry pizza or banana pizza or even chocolate pizza! 

Like most Melissa and Doug products, this one is made to last! The quality wooden construction will last for years and I will hopefully be able to hang onto these for my grandkids! 

The toppings pieces are on the small side and could present a choking hazard, so keep them away or at least supervise when they’re around babies and toddlers or anyone/anything who likes to put things in their mouth. 

My only complaint is that I wish the nice wooden box it came in had a lid or something to keep the pieces from scattering everywhere. We keep ours in a plastic bin to keep all the pieces together. 

Overall, this is a fun toy that we’ve gotten hours of fun out of. I love it when Froot Loop makes me a pizza slice.
