I wrote about tea tree essential oil Last week. I thought I'd write about another one of our favorites today.

One of our favorite essential oils to use around the house is Roman Chamomile. It is safe to use around kids and babies and smells amazing. It has a ton of different health benefits too. It’s definitely an oil to add to your kit!

Roman Chamomile is an anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, calming, and relaxing oil. It can help with negative emotions such as stress, hopelessness, discouragement, anger, and anxiety. It can also help with sleep problems. It is ideal to use sparingly in a nursery or kids room if they have trouble calming down before bed, or put a few drops around your room if you’re the one suffering from insomnia.

There are other health benefits to Roman Chamomile. It is good to fight allergies, both used in a diffuser and directly on the skin. Try putting it on the bottoms of your feet before bedtime. It is also good to soothe insect stings. You can mix it with a bit of coconut oil and rub in or just use it neat (this is one of the few essential oils that can be used neat). To use on cuts and scrapes, which will reduce inflammation and speed healing, add directly to the injury. Dilute with a carrier oil if desired. If the injury covers a large area, you can put a few drops of the oil into a bath and soak the affected area. If you are using it for a calming effect, put a drop on your fingers and inhale the scent or put a few drops in some steaming/boiling water, put a towel over your head, and breathe. You can also massage a drop into the reflex points on your feet.

This oil is one of the few that is safe to use with babies, but use diluted. Mix with lavender for a sleep aid. Mix with citrus or lemongrass for a quick mood boost. Mix a drop or two with a tablespoon of carrier oil for a massage for baby or you! It helps with dry skin and sore muscles too. It smells very nice. It has a floral, fruity scent.

Froot Loop has trouble calming down before naps and bedtime. We’ve started putting a couple drops of roman chamomile and lavender around his bedroom. It seems to get him to fall asleep a little sooner. I have used it on bug bites and it really helps make them feel better. Personally, I love the smell.

We started making him a “nightmare spray” with roman chamomile, lavender, orange, and grapefruit oils. He asks for it every night and I’m not sure if it helps with the frequency of his nightmares, but he doesn’t worry about having them anymore.

Here’s a note of caution: If you are allergic or sensitive to ragweed, this oil might irritate your allergies. Test a tiny patch on the skin before using on a larger area.

Remember, I’m not a doctor or a health professional. Use these products at your own risk.

What do you use to relax?

I love oil...I haven't tried the chamomile … I always choose minty smell or bamboo smell.. I don't know. I just don't like the flowery smell.. =) .. I feel more relax if its citrus...

Chamomile is fantastic! I use it soothe their tummies when blended with a carrier oil. I give my kids a drop of lavender on a tissue for them at bedtime. Chamomile will help them sleep too!
