On Keto? On Atkins? Going Sugar Free? Try Xylitol!

As many of you know, I have PCOS, and while I've been managing it, Mama still needs a little help sometimes. Enter Morning Pep Pure Birch Xylitol.
Xylitol is a type of sweetener called a sugar alcohol. It is a naturally-occurring alcohol found in most plant materials and in many fruits and vegetables. Due to its many amazing benefits, xylitol is a very widely used sugar substitute along with stevia. There are many other artificial sweeteners (think aspartame, Splenda, etc.) as well, but these are just as bad for you as sugar!
I was very excited to receive this sample from the company. I've used sugar substitutes in the past, namely, stevia, but stevia has an aftertaste! I am happy to say that this Xylitol does not.
Birch trees are a slender fast-growing tree that has thin bark. I used to live in Colorado, where the birch trees grew aplenty! The sap from the birch tree contains vital vitamins and minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, phosphorous, iron, sodium, and amino acids. It is also rich in vitamin C and B vitamins. The buds of the birch tree contain antibiotic and diuretic properties while the bark contains digestive, diuretic, and anti-pyretic properties. Xylitol extracted from birch are of highest quality and benefit. Morning Pep xylitol is 100% birch extracted. Morning Pep xylitol Is extracted from 100% birch (Not Corn) Is Made in The USA (Not China or Asian countries) It is free of GMO, Corn, Wheat, Soy and Gluten.
This Xylitol product is so easy to use... it's a 1:1 ratio of sugar, so basically, whatever sugar you'd put in your drink or your recipe, just use the same amount of Xylitol instead. I've personally used this making koolaid for the kids and me, and I've put it in my coffee and tea. We've also used it in a pancake recipe.
Actually, I've mostly gone sugar-free in my coffee. I usually just use a bit of unsweetened almond milk and that's it. However, there are some coffees we make at home that NEED a little sweetness, so then I put in a pinch of this Xylitol and off I go.
With baking, you'd never know there wasn't sugar in it. We tried making pancakes with it, and just used the same amount of this Xylitol as we would have with the sugar.
Xylitol also has other benefits. It is recommended by dentists because of the good things it does for teeth. It is also great for diabetics to use instead of sugar. It also has been known to help with bone density.
Sugar is possibly the WORST thing for your teeth. Everyone knows sugar causes cavities and gum decay. Xylitol is a magic bullet in dental health. Xylitol has been found to reduce plaque, caries, gingivitis and cavities. Although it doesn't grow enamel or make teeth more resistant to acid, xylitol does fight off the bacteria causing tooth decay. Some of the world bacterial strains, like Streptococcus bacilli, can be neutralized by xylitol, thereby preventing infections in the mouth and getting rid of halitosis which is another word for bad breath. By using Morning pep xylitol you’re decreasing the infectious decay-causing bacteria and thus promote a healthier environment for those good bacteria that are less harmful to the teeth composition.
Speaking of sugar being the worst thing for you, sugar is also a killer. It can cause diabetes. Diabetics and pre-diabetics and other people with insulin sensitivity, such as those with PCOS have to really avoid sugar. One of the most common afflictions of modern life is diabetes. Therefore, any solution that can help manage diabetes, which is an inability of the body to properly maintain insulin and glucose levels throughout the body, is very important. Xylitol is a chemically processed form of sugar, meaning that the body cannot break down the carbohydrates into simple sugars and flood the bloodstream with it, thereby throwing off the balance of insulin and glucose. This means that diabetic patients can consume xylitol in all of their normal foods without the fear of huge plunges or spikes in blood sugar levels. Xylitol has helped millions of diabetic patients around the world.
Some recent studies have shown that xylitol can help slow the bone tissue degradation. Osteoporosis is a decrease in bone mass and density. Bones may seem dead or stagnant, but they are made up of living tissue that is constantly decaying and regenerating. Osteoporosis may begin with a slow loss of bone mass, but as your body struggles to keep up the bone building process, your overall bone density will gradually fall lower and lower. Studies have effectively shown that xylitol may have significant benefit to help slow the loss of bone tissue, protect bone mass and significantly slow down loss of bone volume.
