Quick and Easy Magazine Collages Tutorial for a Rainy Day, Fine Motor Activity for Toddlers, Preschoolers, & Kids

The boys and I spent most of the day yesterday making collages from magazine pictures! It was good practice for his scissor skills (although I did most of the cutting).

I subscribe to tons of magazines, mostly just for something to do while the boys are in the bathtub and also for projects just like this. I get most of my subscriptions for less than $5 a year. They tend to stack up, but I sort of read them in spurts. I also grab a stack for my mom to look at whenever we see her.

Instead of using glue sticks (which I will switch to once Froot Loop gets a little older), I cut a large piece of sticky shelf liner/adhesive paper like THIS.

Froot Loop is still working on his cutting skills. I gave him a few magazine pages for him to practice his cutting while I actually cut out the pictures he was interested in. The BEST scissors for him, since it appears he's going to be a lefty like his Daddy, are THESE from Wescott. They're both right and left handed so he can use them with either hand.

Then we went through the magazines together and he told me what pictures he wanted on his collage. When we had a ton of pictures ready to go, I placed the sticky paper on the table and placed a bunch of pictures around it and told him to go to town with it. He did great at first, but once the space was running out, he needed some help placing the smaller pictures in the little leftover sticky slivers.

Once he was done, he immediately wanted to hang it in his room. I put the smaller one that he did mostly by himself on his bedroom door. The bigger one that we did together is hanging on the wall by my sewing table so I can look at it.

For Cocoa Puff's collage, I just cut out pictures from our grocery ads. He actually did very well. I handed him each picture and pointed to the sticky sheet and he put the picture down on the paper. He did get mad a few times because he couldn't pick up the picture again, so he wandered off with the pictures a few times. It was pretty funny.

He ended up with a nice collage though! His first collage! He loves to paint and do other crafts and art with me too. He even scribbles with crayons or pens or whatever he can get his cute little hands on.

I loved making these as a kid in school. Never would have thought of this type of sticky paper though so you don't have to worry about glue sticks. Love it!

Now, this is an awesome product for our kids. It helps them to create artwork without us worrying of hurting themselves of using scissors.

I live in the desert, so my toddler and I don't have rainy day activities; we have too-hot-to-go-outside activities. Lol. This one looks like fun (when I'm brave enough to pull out a scissor).
