Tutorial: Fall Painting 3 Ways. So Easy, a Baby Could Do It (and he did!!)

It’s always the BEST DAY EVER when I get the paint out around here. Froot Loop has recently REALLY gotten into painting with brushes and instruments, although he still doesn’t like finger painting at all. Sensory issues… I have tried painting with Cocoa Puff a few times and he really seems to enjoy it if he’s in a good mood.
So, the other day, I got out some red and yellow Tempera paint and decided to do two different activities with the boys:
For Froot Loop, I found all of my fall and Halloween themed cookie cutters and let him paint/stamp with those.
For the Cookie Cutter Painting, all you need is:
Red Tempera Paint
Yellow Tempera Paint
Fall Themed Cookie Cutters
Just squirt your two colors of paint onto a large paper plate or plastic tray and slightly swirl them. Have your kiddo dip the bottom of the cookie cutter into the paint and then stamp it on the paper! So much fun and so easy!
Cocoa Puff made two different trees! The first one was made from him first painting, then cutting out handprints. The second was from him “stamping” his fingers and hands.
For the Handprint Tree, you need:
Red and Yellow Tempera Paint
Paint/Marker Paper
Pencil
Scissors
Glue
Brown Construction Paper or craft foam
Allow your kiddo to fingerpaint a large piece of paper with your fall colors.
Let dry.
While it’s drying, cut out a tree trunk from a piece of brown construction paper or craft foam.
Once dry, trace your kiddo’s hands as many times as possible on their painted paper. Cut out each handprint.
Glue the handprints in “layers” or “rows” to the tree trunk. I did the first row with three handprints, then I added another row/layer behind them, and then another one behind it and then I filled in the rest of it until it looked how I wanted it. If Cocoa Puff was older, I would have let him do this part himself, but I really kind of wanted it to look a certain way so I just did it this time.
The other tree that Cocoa Puff made is one with his fingerprints and handprints. This one is super easy too!
You need:
Red and Yellow Tempera paint
Paint/Marker Paper
Brown Marker or paint
These steps can actually be reversed.
Allow your kiddo to dot the top part of the paper with their fingertips. Cocoa Puff likes to slap the paper over and over with his whole hand and that gave a fun effect too.
Let dry.
Once dry, draw your tree trunk and branches onto the paper!
I decided to draw the trunk last so I could match it up to where the leaves were. For older kids, I’d probably draw/paint the tree trunk first and let them add the leaves.
I have displayed both of his fun, awesome trees as well as Froot Loop’s cookie cutter stamps on my sewing wall so I can look at them while I do my sewing.
What’s your favorite thing to paint?
Comments
We used the hand prints for turkeys before but hadn’t tried the trees. We missed an opportunity there. He is twenty now I don’t think I’ll be able to get him to try it now.
Fun activity.
