Surgery on schedule: How to Prepare for Ear Tube & Adenoid Removal Surgery

I had Froot Loop's pre-op visit today. Things are right on schedule for him to have his ear tube and adenoid surgery next week.

I got a call on the way up to the doctor that since we have not met our deductible yet for the year and then have a 20% coinsurance after that, that this surgery will cost us well over $5000! *insert freak out here*

Froot Loop had a horrible time at the appointment. We got there 15 minutes early and got checked in. There was an emotional support dog in training there, and I was going to tell Froot Loop to leave it alone, but the owner asked if we'd mind petting and playing with her. Her name was Annie and she was so sweet and so cute. I gave her some good skritches and wished her luck. Froot Loop gave some good pets too and that put him in a good mood.

We only waited a few minutes and got called back to take his vitals. We waited for quite awhile for the doctor though. Froot Loop got impatient and started getting into stuff and freaking out while I cleaned all the old papers out of my bag. Froot Loop proceeded to soak those papers just a few minutes later with his water bottle.

The doctor finally came in (who I really do like, but he's in and out so quick that you don't really get to spend much time with him...) and we quickly went over the procedure as Froot Loop's behavior just got worse and worse. He threw a complete tantrum because I wouldn't talk to him because I was trying to listen to the doctor and his super important pre-surgery instructions. Ugh. At least the Doc was understanding, but it was still embarrassing. Froot Loop also almost broke a super expensive chair, which would have been awesome since this surgery is already costing us a fortune.

I signed some papers and that was it. No pre-op blood work, no tests. Nothing. Apparently with young kids like Froot Loop, they do all of that on the day of surgery to keep the emotional trauma to a minimum. This is why we probably why we have to be there at 6:30 AM... that's fine though, I'd rather only have one, long, stressful day.

We quickly went over the risks and rewards of the surgery, which I've gone over several times already. Yes, I know there can be bleeding. I know his throat will be sore. I know he will need to be on antibiotics and ear drops. I KNOW he can't have any ibuprofen or anything else that could potentially thin his blood. I KNOW he can't have any food or drink after 10 pm the night before... we've been through all of this!

We then went next door to the hospital where he will be having the surgery. I gave him a tour of the general check-in area and then the surgery waiting room. Since it was still way too early to get lunch, I also took him downstairs to the cafeteria and meeting rooms just for fun. Then we left. A really nice receptionist helped me talk Froot Loop through the procedure. I'm very grateful for that.

It was still early for our lunch, so I decided to take him shopping. I needed some craft supplies and Honey Graham's meds. I stopped at Dollar Tree and he had a full blown tantrum because I wouldn't let him have something he wanted (I had already let him pick out a glow stick and a string of lights and some of my craft supplies). It was embarrassing and humiliating.

We finally got out of there and went on to WalMart for Honey Graham's medicine. I grabbed a few groceries and the rest of my craft supplies. I also let Froot Loop pick out a few activities to do next week since we absolutely have to keep him quiet and still for a few days. Good luck with that... He got mad at me in the store too and I'm not sure why.

I let him choose where we ate for lunch and he chose Whataburger! He sort of ate, but not really, and finally I needed to call "time" beause I had to go to the bathroom and get home to get Cocoa Puff ready for a nap. Ugh.

Both of the boys took a 3 hour nap! Geez.

I'm stressed out. My mom will be here tomorrow and I will be spending the weekend helping her and my dad unload the truck and getting her settled.

The moral of the story is that I'm probably not going to have regular posts next week. I will update y'all on the little guy's surgery and any other developments for sure.

What are your plans this weekend?
