These are the Voyages...We're a Trekkie Family!

We are nuts about Star Trek in this house. We started with watching TOS (The Original Series), then moved onward to the motion pictures. Next came Star Trek:TNG (The Next Generation) followed by the TNG movies. We went on to DS9 (Deep Space Nine), and then are currently in the last season of Voyager. Next comes Enterprise!
We had just finished watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with the boys (well, Froot Loop watched some of them, but we often continued watching during naptime or after he went to bed). That 10-episode ending arc is sure epic. I love The Sisko. I love Dr. Bashir and Chief O’Brien. I love Worf so much. I really loved how Dax developed through the series, and I find Ezri to be a lot like me in some ways, which is pretty funny to watch. I come short of saying that Deep Space Nine is my favorite iteration of Star Trek, because you can’t really compare DS9 to the other Star Trek iterations. TNG and DS9 are so different from each other. There’s some character overlap and some other overlap, but otherwise they’re two totally different ideas. And Voyager is brilliant. I mean, the whole series is them getting lost in the Delta quadrant and trying to get home! We really meet some interesting species.
Anyway, we started watching Voyager with the boys right after we finished DS9, and Froot Loop was pretty excited about it, but he kept assuming that Voyager was the Enterprise. We had to explain to him that there are other ships (we had to do this all the time with DS9, especially when the Defiant was being used) besides the Enterprise. He had all sorts of questions about the ships and we had fun explaining the differences between Voyager and Enterprise. (He does not know that the Enterprise was destroyed in Generations. We wouldn’t let him watch that part because we weren’t sure how he’d take it. I mean, he sleeps with a stuffed Enterprise and also has an inflatable one hanging in his room. He also frequently builds the Enterprise with his Duplo blocks. He loves that starship. We also did not let him watch Kirk self-destruct the Enterprise in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.) He probably knows more about Star Trek than the average adult. I’m hoping this instills a love for physics, science, and science fiction in his super intelligent little brain.
It may seem weird that we watch Star Trek with our boys, but it’s a show that we all enjoy and although it does get sort of violet at times and there’s the occasional swear word, so far they’ve been able to handle it. Froot Loop gets a little caught up when there are space battles and all the ships are firing at each other. He also asks why people are fighting when there is hand-to-hand combat (and we’re careful about letting him watch anything too violent. There are a few episodes where Klingons are going a little crazy on each other that we decided to not let him watch).
It’s pretty funny actually. Froot Loop tells other people about the Enterprise and our bedtime stories often happen in the Star Trek galaxy. He loves to babble about the warp drive and the phasers, Captain Kirk, Captain Picard, Data, and the Klingons. It’s pretty funny. Many phone calls to my parents and grandparents end up being about the Voyages. Heh. My little Trekkie...
Meanwhile, Cocoa Puff was excited to see things that appeared vaguely Star Trekish to him, but he was confused that there were Starships flying around to music other than the DS9 theme. It took about 3 episodes, and he was enthralled with the Voyager theme too! Personally, the DS9 theme is my favorite, though. That brass section is just... oooh!
Next time when we start watching Star Trek over again from the beginning, we’re going to go in chronological order. We did TOS, TOS movies, TNG, TNG movies, DS9, VOY, and we will watch Enterprise next (I have not seen any Enterprise, but I understand the general plot and premise). So when we went from TNG to DS9, all of a sudden the Duras sisters were alive again! And now all of a sudden starting Voyager, they were fighting the Maquis again! It was a little jarring.
So that’s us. Our little Trekkie nerd family. We love other science fiction as well, but Star Trek is our favorite.
How about you? Are you Trekkies? Do you enjoy scifi?
