Review of Melissa & Doug Wooden Pancake Pretend Play Toy Set

Pancakes are one of our go to breakfasts here. Honey Graham makes them at least twice a week because they’re so easy to make and so versatile. Froot Loop saw this set in the store and he said he wanted it. He got it for Christmas and he still plays with it frequently.
This set is made of wood and is very durable and sturdy, as are most of Melissa and Doug’s products.
There’s 2 pancakes with velcro pieces on them, 9 toppings with velcro (3 banana, 3 chocolate chips, and 3 blueberries), 4 pats of butter with velcro (so you can cut it apart), a skillet with velcro, knife, spatula, paper place setting, and corrugated storage box with a printed play cooktop surface.
The pancakes are double sided. The first side has a velcro piece and represents the uncooked side. It sticks to the skillet. You can take the spatula and flip it over and cook the other side, which has 4 pieces of velcro on it to hold toppings and the butter. It has syrup already printed on it.
When the pancake is done cooking, you can take the spatula and remove the pancake and serve! Don’t forget to add your toppings, then repeat with the other pancake!
The pancakes can stick to each other to make a short stack or stick to the skillet or to the toppings. This is nice for little hands so the pieces aren’t sliding all over the place.
I like to ask for my pancakes to order so Froot Loop has to follow directions. It’s also good for him to slice the butter and flip the pancakes and take the toppings off and put them back on. It develops his hand eye coordination and also works those prewriting muscles and fine motor skills!
We have used the toppings to work on counting and patterns and sorting. We have also combined the toppings from other sets (like the waffle and even the pizza and birthday cake) (add links) to make some really interesting pancakes!
It’s a lot of fun and I really enjoy making pancakes with Froot Loop!
What’s your favorite pancake topping?
