Review of Fisher Price Roller Blocks: One of the Best Baby Toys EVER!

One of Cocoa Puff’s very favorite toys to play with are his Roller Blocks from Fisher Price. They are a fairly simple toy and since he loves blocks and balls so much, I thought I'd try these out.
I bought him a set of the standalone (the flower and numbers) to see if he enjoyed them before putting a bunch of other roller block items on his Christmas list. Since the suggested age is 6 months- 3 years, I wanted to make sure he could actually play with them first. He was about 5 ½ months at the time.
We received the fire truck, convertible car, airplane, Whirlin’ Train town, and double sided play wall for Christmas. We also got the other set of the standalone blocks (vehicles and shapes).
Cocoa Puff really loves these blocks! The afternoon I gave him the flower and number blocks, he immediately started to try to chew on them (of course... ). He could easily grab them. He enjoyed looking at the designs on the blocks. The flower and number set has a pink, purple, and green color scheme and has animals, flowers, numbers, and faces on the blocks. It is probably aimed more toward girls, but the blocks are not overly “girly.”
I’m a huge fan of stacking for babies. It’s a great way to encourage and develop fine motor skills and hand- eye coordination. It also introduces problem solving and a new way of thinking. The set of four blocks stack easily on top of each other and the images on the blocks spin around inside as the block is rolled. The blocks are shaped so that the four sides with the rolling images are curved outward and the other two sides are concave so they stack and fit together perfectly. I think it makes it a little easier to stack to since they fit inside of each other slightly. Cocoa Puff is nearly able to stack them by himself, and he loves to knock them over once someone else stacks them for him.
The other set of standalone blocks are vehicles and shapes. It has a basic color scheme of reds, blues, and yellow. Animals, vehicles, shapes, and colors are featured on the spinning blocks.
These blocks roll across the floor kind of like cars. It is a lot of fun! The blocks can be pushed around or rolled, and the images inside spin around.
Both of these blocks are made to go with the other roller block sets. There are currently three vehicles that each come with a block. There is a red fire truck, a pink convertible car, and an orange airplane. Each of these has a space for a block and when the vehicle is pushed around, it causes the block to spin. The blocks that come with the vehicles are themed toward the vehicle.
The airplane has a block with pilot faces on it. The red propeller also spins around, which made Froot Loop laugh and want to steal the plane away from Cocoa Puff.
The pink convertible car has a block with a female face on it. As it rolls along the ground, the purple wheels make a rattling sound, which engages the senses. Again, this vehicle is geared more toward baby girls, but there’s no reason boys can’t play with it too. Cocoa Puff likes the rattling sound of the car and likes to push it around.
The fire truck has fire chief faces on it. The emergency lights on the top of the truck also move up and down.
Those three vehicles get played with nearly every day. Cocoa Puff loves to put the blocks in and take them out and drive the cars around. Froot Loop even plays with them too.
The Whirlin’ Train town is another favorite.
This one comes with two different roller blocks that have funny faces on them. There are two places for the blocks in the bottom part that spins around and causes the faces to spin as well as a resting place on top of the tunnel. The train and the blocks spin around in a circle when the lever is pulled. Cocoa Puff can’t quite pull the lever by himself yet, but he is greatly amused when someone else pulls it and the blocks spin around. He does enjoy putting the blocks in the train and taking them out.
The biggest part of this set that we own is the play wall. It has two sides of action. One side is a wall with pegs on it (kind of like that game on Price is Right that rhymes with BLINKO), and the other has three different ramps.
The wall comes with four blocks that have funny faces on them. When a block is dropped down the peg wall, it plays a song as it hits the bottom. When a block goes down the ramps, it hits a sensor that plays a silly sound. The “see saw” at the bottom of the peg wall can also play songs if it is tilted by hand. Cocoa Puff is able to pick up the blocks and drop them down either side of the wall. It is very easy for babies to play with but Froot Loop loves playing with it too at age 3 ½.
There are several resting areas for blocks at the bottom of the wall and in front of the ramps. These resting areas make it extra easy for stacking the blocks.
The wide base of the wall allows babies to grow from sitting and playing to standing and playing. Cocoa Puff tries to pull himself to standing all the time.
The wall comes unassembled but it is very easy to put together. I think it took me about 5 minutes. It needs 2 AA batteries (not included). The whole thing is plastic pieces that just press together.
Cocoa Puff still plays with these all the time at 11 months old (holy cow, time has flown way too fast!)
There is also a wagon and a zebra that goes with the roller blocks.
The wagon has multiple different ways to play. There is a sit and play mode that allows babies to stack the blocks and flip them on the ramp. There is also a clacking flag. The tailgate can be lowered to allow the blocks to fall out of the back of the wagon once baby is interested in crawling. As babies grow older and start walking, the handle unfolds from under the wagon to allow the wagon to be pulled along.
The wagon plays music and sounds with 2 AA batteries (not included). It comes with 4 blocks, 2 with faces, and 2 with vehicles.
I think Cocoa Puff would love this, especially as he learns to crawl and walk. I’m putting this on his wishlist for his birthday!
The final roller blocks toy is the tumblin’ zebra.
I decided not to put this on our wishlist because a lot of the reviews said that all the zebra does is sometimes wave its arms up and down as the blocks don’t always hit the arms. There is also an area to stack the blocks on the zebra’s head. It comes with three animal themed roller blocks. The blocks simply fall through the zebra and can come out of either foot.
Overall, this particular roller blocks toy seems to be too high priced for the item. I would buy the three animal themed blocks if they were sold separately, but we’re going to pass on the zebra.
All in all, we love the Fisher Price Roller Blocks sets. Cocoa Puff enjoys them a lot and plays with them all the time. I love that the blocks can be played with by themselves too. The blocks and toys engage the senses with the bright colors. His hand-eye coordination is challenged as he stacks the blocks and I can practically see the little gears in his head turning as he tries to figure out how to stack them. Of course, knocking the blocks down always ends up in a smile or giggles. The three vehicles are a great extension of the blocks and also are enjoyable played with alone. Most babies love cars and pushing them around. The blocks and vehicles combined offer an additional level of problem solving and enjoyment. The Whirlin’ Train town is another fun way to play with the blocks. Babies just seem to like things that spin around! Finally, the double sided wall allows an additional dimension of play as Cocoa Puff has to figure out how to pick up the blocks and drop them into the wall. The sounds appeal to his senses too.
I highly recommend this toy for babies around 6 months and up. Froot Loop plays with these toys as well and he’s 3 ½. He doesn’t play with them for very long but he is interested in them. I really appreciate that these blocks and sets grow with the babies as they turn into toddlers. The sets are reasonably priced and allow for all sorts of ways to play with them.
Which Christmas gifts are your kids still playing with?
