Greenage: Hape Toys Pretend Play Wood & Felt Salad Set For Kids (A Review)

Froot Loop got a play salad set from Hape for Christmas last year. He went through a salad phase when he would eat a lot of lettuce, so Santa Claus thought he would love this pretend salad set that he could eat over and over and over again!
I’m pretty impressed with this set. It is a mix of felt and wood pieces, with one plastic bowl. The salad tongs, oil, vinegar, pepper, and toppings are all wood, and the lettuce and little carrots are made of felt.
The toppings are shaped red and yellow peppers, cucumbers, onions, and tomatoes. The cucumbers, onions, and tomatoes are painted wooden discs. Hape toy finishes are all non-toxic and child safe. They are also made very well. There’s 3 of each of the toppings. There are 5 little felt carrot strips and 10 shaped felt lettuce leaves.
I even have fun playing with this little set, especially when Froot Loop and I make salads together. Froot Loop puts the lettuce and carrots in the bowl, then adds the toppings one by one, usually after sorting them. Then he adds the oil and vinegar and some pepper. He takes the salad tongs and stirs the whole thing. Then he tries to use the tongs to take the pieces out to put them on our plates, but he hasn’t quite mastered that yet.
Another favorite thing we like to do is practice our sorting and our patterns. I also ask him to make me a salad with or without specific ingredients to see how well he can follow directions.
We have a Hape pita set too (link), and the pieces from both of these mix and match, which is fun.
I am impressed with the quality of the wooden pieces. The paint hasn’t even gotten scratched and everything is holding up very well. The felt pieces haven’t gotten ripped or torn, and the whole set is in practically perfect shape despite abuse from a 3 year old.
I am very adamant about him putting all the pieces in a Cocoa Puff proof plastic container when we’re done because the pieces are pretty small and are definitely a choking risk for babies and toddlers (and dogs, etc.).
We have fun making these salads together, and it’s fun watching Froot Loop put it together and then take out all the pieces one by one and sort them by shape or color.
Soon he will be making me real salads because he’s just growing up too fast!!!!
What do you put on your salad?
