Purple Ring: A Tribute to my Grandma

I had a really really hard time after my Grandma passed away. She and I were very close and she was my spiritual role model. I still feel sort of lost without her.
One of the things I bought as a remembrance of her was a simulated amethyst ring. Her birthday was in February, so I thought I’d get her birthstone.
I remember growing up, when I was really little, she took me on a “tour” of her jewelry box and she showed me some of her pieces, including a purple ring. At the time, I was really into purple, so I remember she told me about how her birthstone was purple and it was called amethyst.
Later that year, one of my Christmas presents from her and my Grandpa was a really pretty necklace with an amethyst in it. I still have it. I still wear it once in awhile.
Anyway, I bought this ring because it reminded me of my Grandma and her February birthday, and the last day I spent with her was on her birthday back when I visited her and my other Grandparents for that long weekend…
I got to spend my Grandma’s last birthday with her. That’s pretty special, especially because the town where most of my family lives is 1200 miles away. She went downhill pretty fast after that (she caught the flu and it was the beginning of the end and I thank GOD she went quickly and didn’t suffer for months on end), and the last time I talked to her was February 11th to tell her Happy Valentine’s Day and that I loved her....
...man, I miss her. I missed her especially last week when Froot Loop started Kindergarten. I kept wanting to call her and talk to her about it. I also really missed her on my birthday since she always called and sang to me.
So, this ring. It’s very pretty. It’s sparkly and looks just like an amethyst. It’s got two little diamonds on either side of the heart. The band is a little thin and the size I ordered is a little big, but that’s okay. It’s beautiful, just like her.
They have all sorts of colors available, for every birthstone, so after I got this ring and wore it for a day or two, I went back and ordered another ring in my Grandpa’s birthstone as well, so I can wear them together.
It’s a sweet reminder of her and my Grandpa and I think of them every time I see my finger. I will probably be back to get other birthstones as well.
What’s your birthstone?
