An Adoption "Tail" of the Best Dog Who No One Else Wanted

I thought that since I had a post about Crunch Berries, that I should share the story about Lucky Charms. We didn't find him: he found us. Enjoy the pictures and the story below.
Honey Graham was walking out of a local restaurant in town in September of 2010 (just after we moved) and this dog came wandering up to him. He took him back to the office to keep him safe--he was probably going to head out into the highway. He gave his information to the vet in case anyone reported him missing.
His coworker tried to guess his name and he responded to Lucky (not his real name, but anyway...)
This being a small town, the state park manager came in to pick up something and identified Lucky as a dog who was abandoned in the local state park with a bag of food and we probably wouldn’t get a call from his owner.
He was just a pup, unaltered, and liked to think with his privates. He really, really wanted to know Crunch Berries in a very personal way. She was not going to have any of that. It was a rough beginning for them.
He stayed in our backyard at first while Honey Graham and Crunch Berries tried to “break” him. He was (and still is) a good dog around humans-- he was very friendly to whoever came into the office. But he had a one-track mind around CB. We left it up to her whether or not we would keep him.
He ended up loving living in the backyard. He hated being brought inside as we had too many rules (like no dogs on the furniture, no chewing on stuff, etc.) and he is much more of a free spirit. We eventually got him neutered, and after that he really calmed down around CB.
We found out later that he was heartworm positive, which is likely why he was abandoned. We fixed that problem and he put on a TON of weight! We knew we could have walked outside any morning to a dead dog, but we kept going and fortunately he survived the treatment.
He’s always been happier outside, but will come in overnight when it’s really cold or during the day during the hottest part of summer. We also bring him in when there’s the threat of severe weather. When we go on vacation, we have friends or family come check on him, play with him, and feed him a couple times a day. It works out for us very well and Lucky Charms is so happy. He’s a great dog. He loves everyone, he’s a great watch dog (although he barks at EVERYTHING and also at NOTHING!), he’s a little hyper, and he’s great with the boys. He knows just how crazy he can be and he also has learned how to annoy Froot Loop just enough to avoid getting into trouble. It is funny to watch those two play together. He has been very gentle with Cocoa Puff, and was with Froot Loop as a baby too. He just sniffs and gives the tiniest of kisses.
I love having him around. He makes me feel safer and he’s so much fun. I’m so glad he picked us to take him home!
How many pets have you rescued?
