Nail Polish for BOYS? Absolutely!

I've made it a point in my parenting life to let the boys play with whatever toys they wanted, even if it was a "girl" toy. They have a doll that they take care of here and there, and for a long time, Cocoa Puff's favorite color was pink. Totally works for me... I'm all for letting my kids express themselves in whatever creative way it might be.

That's why I was SO excited to find and try The Alpha Kids. They have nail polish designed for girls AND boys! They believe "All children should be allowed the creative freedom to use their imagination, experiment with color, and have FUN! Let's leave the stereotypes and focus on exploration, individuality, and artistry." SPOT ON, Y'all!

It has always bugged me when people think that boys shouldn't play with girl toys and girls shouldn't play with boy toys. Growing up, I had my share of Barbies and dress up, but you know what? I was happier with Legos, Hot Wheels, Nerf Guns, and playing sports with the neighbor boys. (And no, not the PINK Legos, y'all.... I wanted the regular LEGOS!) Why should I force my kids to play with "boy" toys? And why is it okay for a girl to be "tough" and want to play with BOY things, but not okay for a boy to want to play with GIRL things? That has NEVER made sense to me.

I believe, along with The Alpha Kids, that it's imperative for young, developing minds and especially emotional and social intelligence, to be given the same opportunities, regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, etc. All that matters is that they're given the chance to create and learn how to express themselves. They do so much growing at this age that it's harmful to stifle their growth and creativity, no matter how that comes across. (And that's exactly why I've been fighting against our local elementary school's discontinuation of the art program)

Their mission statement is "To encourage ALL kids to have fun with color, if they want to! If boys want their nails painted because they are inspired to, then they should absolutely be allowed to. With The Alpha Kids, all creative, original, and brave kids are represented in nail polish industry."

The Alpha Kid makes kid-friendly polishes... they come in several kid-friendly colors and they are 10-free, Vegan, and Cruelty-free. They're also non toxic and handcrafted in small batches in the USA. I love the color names: Blaster Blue, Yo Yo Yellow, Go Go Green, Outrageous Orange, Radical Red, Powerful Purple, and Glorious Grey. Just remember that the containers ARE made of glass, so they WILL break if dropped. That's really the only thing about them that's not 100% kid friendly, but you kind of HAVE to store nail polish in glass containers...

My favorite thing is that they're made to be applied quickly. No base or top coats are needed, and you only need one coat of the nail polish! My kids DON'T EVER sit still, so anything needs to be done super quickly. This nail polish does the trick! The colors are super bright (We picked our favorite sports team colors to try out and they both decided to share them!) and vibrant, and one coat is definitely enough. When I was done with Froot Loop, he looked at his hands and exclaimed, "Mama, this is SO COOL!"

The boys love them and they LOVE answering all the questions they get about them. "Look what Mama did!" "Mama painted our nails!" My oldest asked what he should do if anyone said that nail polish is for girls and I asked him, "Are YOU a girl?" He said, "No, of course not!" and I answered, "Well, then nail polish isn't just for girls, then, right?" I hope it works, and there's a tiny bit of worry of teasing in the back of my mind, but I think he will be able to handle it.

You know, honestly, this has been great! And also, it's helped a little with piano lessons! Seriously! It's helped a lot with using correct fingering.

I love this nail polish. My kids do too. Major WIN in my Mama book!

Love this post so much! Gender stereotypes are a thing of the past and nothing helps boys develop into respectful men like encouragement to be in touch with their creative and emotional sides! :)
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:27 PM
I completely agree! My goal is to raise emotionally and socially competent men!
Melissa - July 23, 2019 1:54 PM
This is nice, I'm glad you and your boys are confident enough to do this! You're setting a good example.
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:27 PM
Thank you.
Sarah - July 23, 2019 2:03 PM
I love this what a great product
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:27 PM
It really is! And honestly, a week later, most of the polish is still on!
April - July 23, 2019 3:21 PM
So cool! I bet my boys would have loved this when they were little! I hate that your local schools are trying to discontinue the arts, what a shame!!!
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:27 PM
It's been a battle. I haven't given up on the arts program, but so far, despite all my efforts, nothing has changed.
Stephanie - July 23, 2019 6:18 PM
So, my favorite singer in the whole world, MAX (@maxmusic on Instagram) loves wearing nail polish. And he's a guy. And he's straight. And he's married. He's just an artistic fella who thinks nail polish is cool. Then there's a guy I grew up with - also straight, also dating a girl, also wears nail polish - while playing guitar in a screamo band. Who says nail polish should just be for women or gay guys or whatever?!? So silly. These are awesome and I love that they're fighting the silly stereotypes AND that you're teaching your kiddos that it's awesome to be THEM!
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:28 PM
I love this! I mean, what's wrong with loving color and self expression so much, you want it on your fingers too! It's better than taking a marker and doing it! Plus, it was fun to do together.
Christa - July 23, 2019 11:43 PM
Yes to changing gender stereotypes! My little boy always asks me to paint his nails when he sees me painting mine. And I do. I hope it becomes more accepted to do and wear and express yourself in any way you enjoy, regardless of gender.
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:29 PM
Oh I just love to hear that! The boys have been asking for quite awhile for me to share my nail polish with them, but I like their kids polish better. I don't wear many bright colors, and I love how it looks on their cute little hands!
Indya | The Small Adventurer - July 24, 2019 3:17 AM
Love, love, LOVE this post! I can't wait until we live in a world where nothing is considered to be for "just girls" or "just boys", and we can ALL just enjoy what we want to enjoy! My eyes really opened up when I started questioning stereotypes, and I'm so glad I did, because honestly: WHY can't boys wear nail polish? WHY can't they like pink? There's no rational answer other than: "They can if they want to!"
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:30 PM
Exactly! Boys AND girls should be able to play with whatever toys they want and like whatever colors they want and grow up to be whatever they want.
Jenn @ Herbloggingideas.com - July 24, 2019 9:17 AM
Love this! My son has been asking me to paint his nails forever..dad is so resistant. I'm going to go for it.
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:30 PM
Yay! Love it!
Becky - July 24, 2019 9:34 AM
I love this so much! Nail polish is fun and colorful, perfect for any kids (or adults) - not just girls.I sold Jamberry for a little bit and I had a friend whose son loved to wear them with all the fun colors and designs!
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:31 PM
Oh yeah! Jamberry would be another great option with all of those fun designs.
STEPHANIE EDDY - July 24, 2019 10:19 AM
This is such a great point! My son has a big sister so we have a lot of her toys around and he loves playing with the dolls or putting on a headband. It's just fun for them to express themselves!
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:32 PM
Exactly, and really, boys who grow up playing with dolls or being allowed to play with "girl" toys and having friends for girls, etc. grow up to be super sweet and kind, and better know how to treat women!
Sharon - July 24, 2019 11:54 AM
Wish I thought of a boy nail polish line
Mama - July 24, 2019 12:30 PM
Right? It's brilliant!
Perri - July 24, 2019 1:47 PM
Love all their colors and that it can be applied quickly with no top coat! My oldest has also painted his fingernails a time or two and it is always hard for him to sit still that long.
Mama - August 2, 2019 9:36 PM
I know! It’s just like trying to give them haircuts... just SIT STILL for two minutes please!!!
Kimmy Mason - July 24, 2019 8:18 PM
I love this! My son is always gets excited when he sees me painting my nails, we will have to try this!
Mama - August 2, 2019 9:36 PM
Yes! That’s how it started with us too. They wanted to know why they couldn’t have colorful fingernails too so I thought... yeah, why can’t they?!
Dawn - July 25, 2019 1:14 PM
I LOVE this! My nephew loves painting his nails, but my own sons are a little too young for it still. Really cool brand, too! I had no idea that it existed!
Mama - August 2, 2019 9:37 PM
It’s a brand new company! I’m lucky to have found them. I love how bright and vivid the colors are.
Stellar Wellness Niomi - July 25, 2019 1:47 PM
Great article. My boys want their nails painted too when I do mine. It's art and fun!
Mama - August 2, 2019 9:38 PM
It is fun. And it’s a cool way for them to express themselves. Why should mama be the only one with colorful fingernails?
Portia - July 26, 2019 6:58 AM
Thank you for talking about this polish for boys. Fabulous idea! Cultural norms are only considered normal because we allow them to be.
Mama - August 2, 2019 9:38 PM
Oooooh that’s such a good point! Very true.
Paige @An Uncomplicated Life Blog - July 27, 2019 10:59 AM
YES! My most current post is all about why I allow my son to do feminine things, so this mirrors my sentiments exactly.
Mama - August 2, 2019 9:38 PM
Excellent. Erase those gender biases!
3 Otters - July 30, 2019 8:32 PM
In the traditional impression of people, only girls use this, you made a great attempt,
Mama - August 2, 2019 9:39 PM
Thanks.
Michelle Robertson - August 2, 2019 3:12 PM
While our opinions may differ, I appreciate your point. I'm not sure my son ever cared about nail polish, but for that matter, neither did my girl. I'm not sure what I would have done, but that was also 20 years ago, and it really never came up. I do love that they have kid-friendly polish available and I love the hint about it helping with piano lessons!
Mama - August 2, 2019 9:40 PM
It’s okay to have a different opinion. My parents absolutely hate that I let them wear it. My parenting style: their body, their choice. And yes, I do love that it is so kid-friendly.
