Book Review: The Other Dog (Be Prepared to CRY!)

I love dogs. I love books. I have dogs. I have books. Shortly after my youngest was born, I came across this book by one of my favorite authors, Madeleine L’Engle! (Author of A Wrinkle in Time)
The book is called The Other Dog.
Touche L'Engle-Franklin is confused: Her mistress goes away for several days and then returns with another dog. But this dog doesn't have a tail. She doesn't have much hair. And she never has to go outside when it's raining. What on earth could the family want with that inferior breed known as Baby?
Based on the true tale of her own poodle's experience coping with a new baby in the house, Newbery-winning author Madeleine L'Engle gives this familiar domestic drama an utterly charming new twist.
Tongue-in-cheek wit, endearing illustrations, and a revealing author's note make this a publishing event to celebrate.
This book is so cute. It's from a dog's point of view when mama and daddy bring home baby. It nearly brought tears to my eyes. I tried to read it to my dog, but she wasn't all that interested. She was more concerned with the little human trying to pull her tail.
The illustrations are beautiful as well. They help tell the story.
If you’ve got little humans and dogs, then this book is for you. It was perfect for Crunch Berries, as she was the first in our household. Lucky Charms joined our family before the boys too, but he’s more of an outdoor dog and he doesn’t really care for being inside with us that much.
Crunch Berries was right by my side throughout my pregnancies. She was very protective the entire time, both times (as well as with my miscarriage). She was in my bedroom with me when both boys were born, and she was introduced to Froot Loop and Cocoa Puff as soon as the boys met me and Daddy and Gramma and got cleaned off.
Oh, Crunch Berries. She was the best dog ever with both boys. So sweet. Very protective. Very snuggly and tolerant of little boy hands. I sure miss her.
I love this book and I still read it to the boys every once in awhile. Then I get sad. But, it’s a great book for anyone with babies and dogs. It would make a GREAT shower present, actually.
Do you like dogs or cats better?

What a beautiful story this is and so fitting for families with dogs and babies! My oldest nephew and his wife have a little one, born prematurely, who is now a few months old and doing well. They also have two BIG dogs and some people were worried about how they would behave with little Benjamin. But they LOVE him and are his ever present guardians! :-)
We have 3 dogs and 8 cats - all rescues - so we love them all (although we do have our favorites!)
