Tutorial: Velcro Popsicle Sticks: Educational, Hands-On STEAM Activity

One of our favorite activities around here was so simple and so cheap to make. It only requires two things:
I chose rainbow sticks, but you could use the plain jumbo sticks too.

Then stick the velcro coins onto the sticks. I put them on both sides. I put the rough half on front and back on one end and the smooth half on the front and back of the other end. (So either side of the popsicle stick has one rough and one smooth piece) I did this for each popsicle stick. So, you will need 2 sets of Velcro coins for each stick. Order enough to cover each stick. So if you order a pack of 100 sticks, you need 200 sets of Velcro coins.
That’s it! It takes awhile to get all the stickers on, but if you put them on securely, they stay on for a long time. We haven’t had any trouble with them after over 2 years!
We like to make shapes and letters and numbers with our velcro sticks. We also like to work on patterns and sorting. The possibilities are endless! One of the things we used to do is sort all the sticks by color and make triangles or squares out of them. We also would do mixing colors, like a red and a blue stick, and I'd ask which stick completes it.
These are great to take in the car or to use for quiet time activities.
