Review of Kidoozie's Light Up, Musical Toy Drum (An AWESOME SENSORY TOY!)

I am going to highly recommend a toy today that both of my kids played with practically nonstop as babies.
This is the Kidoozie (International Playthings) Flash Beat Drum! I first discovered it when I was substitute teaching. One of the Special Education classes I would frequently sub had one of these drums in it and it was a favorite toy by all. So when I got pregnant with Froot Loop, I put it on his baby registry and we received it for his first Christmas.
It has three different buttons on the side that allow for three different types of “play.” There is one button that allows for drum set sounds. There is another that makes it play silly sounds and yet another that makes the drum play one of a few cute songs when the drum is hit. The songs are the favorite by both boys. The songs are fun and repetitive, but I haven’t found them annoying, and I get pretty annoyed with noisy toys.
The drum also makes noises as it is rolled on its side. We used this feature to help with Cocoa Puff’s crawling.
Fortunately, the drum has a switch on the bottom with two different volume levels. The loud volume is pretty loud, but the quieter one is tolerable.
The drum is just over 7 inches tall, wide, and deep. It does not take up a ton of room, but it is big enough to actually be played with. It has held up very well to drops and throws over the years, and believe me, I think Froot Loop was TRYING to break it! There’s just a little bit of paint chipped off, otherwise, it looks brand new! We’ve gotten TWO baby uses out of it, and I will hold on to it for friends/family because it is in such good shape.
It does take 3 AA batteries, but I’ve only had to change them once or twice. They seem to last a LONG time. The drum gets very annoying as the batteries run out, but at least that gave me extra incentive to get the batteries changed right away!
Cocoa Puff loves banging on this drum. I can usually distract him from doing something I don’t want him to do by getting the drum to play music. Froot Loop was the same way. I remember Froot Loop turning on the music for this drum and then turning on the music for EVERY SINGLE ONE of his other music toys! I also remember Froot Loop actually banging on the drum a lot too just using the drum or silly noises. Cocoa Puff isn’t as interested in that yet, but he’s still on the younger end of the recommended age spectrum. He loves to dance to the songs, though!
Overall, this is a very fun and not super annoying toy for babies and toddlers, especially for music lover parents! I think it is a great way to introduce music and also teach cause and effect. The rolling motion is also great for babies learning to crawl and walk. I used to bring it in the car with Froot Loop because it was a toy he enjoyed and it was easy enough for him to operate on his own and keep him occupied for awhile. Eventually it would be thrown to the side though (usually on top of the poor dog).
I’m trying really hard to think of anything negative about this toy. I guess sometimes the boys would get a little frustrated that they couldn’t get the drum to play the song until they figured out they had to push the BLUE button first and THEN hit the top. That is not the fault of the toy, but it is worth pointing out.
This toy is definitely worth the money. It’s fun, well made, fosters creativity and learning, and isn’t too expensive. Yes it’s electronic and a baby might have just as much fun banging on an empty coffee can, and that’s a great thing to do too, but I like that this one has different sounds and modes of play. Both boys still play with it, so it will get years of use!
Do you go with the flow or march to the beat of your own drum?
