Birthday Party Under Construction! Here's How We Threw a Construction Themed Party: It was a SMASH!

I recently threw a birthday party for Froot Loop. It was for his 5th birthday. Somehow, I blinked, and he turned 5 years old! This led me to remember his sweet construction-themed birthday party from two years ago, so I put together a roundup post for how to throw a fun Construction Themed party!
For Froot Loop’s 3rd birthday party, he requested a truck party. I was able to throw together a pretty fun construction truck themed party. Here’s what I ended up with.
CAT truck centerpieces. I put confetti into the scoopers so it looked like they were distributing the confetti onto the tables. It gave a cool effect.
I wish I had thought to look for these cake toppers before ordering a cake with them. I would have saved quite a bit of money. The cake did look really awesome though!
I bought these cone candles and added them to the cake. They were so cute and everyone loved them.
These pullback truck racers went into the favor boxes. They were lots of fun.
I also included these stickers in the favor boxes.
One of these construction ducky favors went into each box as well.
I had one of these dover construction books as a prize for the game, but I never got around to actually doing the game at the party, so I just gave it to Froot Loop as an extra present.
These mini cat trucks were used as balloon weights and party favors. Froot Loop got to keep the ones used as balloon weights.
We put construction zone tape all over the house.
I made a bean bag toss game out of this diamond duct tape. I covered six large butter containers with this tape for the buckets.
I put strips of construction duct tape all over the kitchen just for fun and I also made the bean bags out of the tape. I wrapped up a half cup of beans in paper towels and then covered the paper towels with the construction tape. I made 8 of them. Froot Loop still plays with this game regularly two years later.
Froot Loop requested a number 3 balloon. This is what he got.
3rd birthday balloons. We added one of these to the balloon bunch.
I couldn’t resist getting these mylar balloons to go with the theme. I saved them and they hung over Froot Loop’s bed for quite a while (until he went nuts during naptime one day and tore everything off of his walls...)
I made a Tootsie Pop holder out of a construction hat.
Here is the tableware we used. I ordered bunches of plates, cups, and napkins. I supplemented with plain yellow and plain black plates and napkins and cups as well. I ended up with way too many and we ended up using them the next time we had company so I didn’t have to run the dishwasher twice a day. I also like to keep some on hand for when we get sick to just make life easier until we feel human again.
I set up orange cones around the house just for fun. It ended up being a fun touch. The boys still love to put these all over the yard.
These swirls were a fun decoration. I think we still have one or two of them put away.
I put yellow crepe paper and black crepe paper everywhere. I created lots of fringe with alternating strips of yellow and black. It looked really cool.

I ordered chrome tape for making a wrecking ball game. I collected all the large boxes around the house and put them outside. I made a ball out of the packing paper and wrapped it several times with regular duct tape. I tied a nylon rope around the whole thing and then taped over everything with the chrome tape. This game was the biggest hit of the party. We had the wrecking ball outside for at least a year. It withstood Texas weather for that long!
I set out some of these big cat trucks we already owned.
I got these black poster letters to create posters that were construction themed. I made a welcome sign and some other birthday signs for the party.
I had yellow and orange poster board. Froot Loop wanted to keep the signs so they hung in his room for awhile. I finally put them away, but we still have them.
Overall, the decorations were a huge hit. Froot Loop loved his party. He actually ended up having two… one for his friends and one for family an hour away. I was able to reuse a lot of the decorations and thought ahead and ordered one large cake instead of two small ones. I had to get creative cutting the cake so we could "reuse" it the next weekend, but I made it work and we all had a blast. One word of advice though: black frosting really is not the best idea for kids. When it comes out, it's rather disgusting. Actually, when it goes IN their mouths, it's pretty disgusting too!
Of course, there was tons of food.
And, Froot Loop invited all of his stuffed animals to be guests at the party. Adorable!
As far as activities for his party, I had some games planned and printed out some construction themed coloring pages for anyone who wanted to do that, but really, everyone just wanted to play outside on our swingset and play with all the toys we had in the yard (teeball, soccer balls, outdoor basketball, cars, etc).
They all took turns with the wrecking ball though! All the kids from ages 1-10 enjoyed it so much.
I can’t believe my little dude is 5. Argh! Where does the time go!? I’m going to blink and these little boys are going to be in high school!
Do you throw big birthday parties for your kiddos?
